Anger Management Group Sessions Available

The Partnership's Family Counseling Center offers weekly Anger and Frustration Management group sessions. The information and skills taught are designed to teach men and women, through separate groups, the skills needed to deal with anger in more appropriate and healthy ways. Based on practical theories of Anger Management, these sessions focus on important topics such as:

how to deal with anger
stress management
fair fighting
self-esteem
communication skills
understanding how our thinking influences behavior

The classes are for those who have issues with anger and/or who are court or probation ordered. Men's groups meet Tuesdays from 6 - 7 p.m. or Fridays from 9-10 a.m. Women's groups meet Tuesdays from 6-7 p.m. All sessions are held at the Family Counseling Center located at 1800 McCallie Avenue. Cost for initial intake is based on a sliding scale, depending on household income. Group sessions are $20 per class, or $120 for individual sessions. There are no adolescent groups available at this time, please call for available individual sessions.

Sessions are facilitated by counselors Nancy Rose and John Morrison. Nancy holds a Master of Social Work degree as well as a Law degree, and has training in family violence, parenting and mediation. John holds a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology, is a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor. He has training in running a Domestic Violence Intervention Program.

Families can enjoy a tasty meal, indoor playground, and family-friendly activities like participating in the Partnership's Family Report Card. Domestic Violence Specialized Law Enforcement School, June 23-27

In this POST Certified course, law enforcement officers will learn about:

strategies for dealing with primary aggressors
tactics for reducing domestic violence
evidence gathering
safety planning, and
available resources

Registration Information: There is no tuition cost to Law Enforcement agencies for the training. Agencies will be responsible for travel and room and board for attendees.

The first 25 registrants will receive a digital camera to assist with domestic violence calls.

The Partnership's Consumer Credit Counseling Services (CCCS) has been helping individuals and families regain control of their personal finances since 1981. How Will You Use Your Tax Rebate?

Tax Rebate Facts

In late April, the U.S. Treasury began sending tax rebates to more than 130 million individuals as part of legislation designed to stimulate the economy. The payments will be received through late spring and summer. The vast majority of Americans who qualify for these checks will not have to do anything other than file their 2007 individual income tax return to receive their rebate. They will not have to complete applications, file any extra forms, or call the Internal Revenue Service to request the payment.

Who & How Much?

The IRS will use an individual’s 2007 tax return to determine eligibility and calculate the basic amount of the rebate. In many cases, the payment will equal the amount of tax liability on the return, with a maximum amount of $600 for individuals ($1,200 for taxpayers who file a joint return), and a minimum of $300 for individuals ($600 for taxpayers who file a joint return).

Even those who have little or no tax liability may qualify for a minimum payment if their tax return reflects $3,000 or more in qualifying income. For the purpose of the stimulus payments, qualifying income consists of earned income, such as wages and net self-employment income. Qualifying income could also consist of Social Security or certain Railroad Retirement benefits and veterans’ disability compensation, pension, or survivors’ benefits received from the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2007.

Parents and certain others who are eligible for a stimulus payment will also receive an additional $300 for each qualifying child. To qualify, a child must be eligible under the Child Tax Credit and have a valid Social Security number. Individuals also must have valid Social Security numbers to qualify for a stimulus payment.

Eligibility for the rebate is subject to maximum income limits. The payment, including both the basic amount and the amount for qualifying children, will be reduced by 5% of the amount of income in excess of $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 for those with a Married Filing Jointly status.

Individuals who pay no tax and have less than $3,000 of qualifying income will not be eligible for the stimulus payment.

What Should You Do?

The rebate checks come with no strings attached. Recipients are free to use the checks any way they please. They may spend, save, or give the money to others. If you do not need all of the funds, you may wish to consider the benefits of using all or a portion of your check to help support your favorite charitable interest. Even though the rebate check is not taxable income, your charitable gifts may still be deductible for federal and possibly state income tax purposes. Additionally, sums given to charity will likely be expended in the form of salaries, programs, supplies, or even building projects, thereby providing a direct stimulus to the economy.

Regardless of how you decide to use these funds, a few minutes spent in planning can maximize the impact of any rebate check you receive.

Youth Services Receives Peyback Foundation Grant

The Partnership's Youth Services program will soon offer new leadership training to youth served through the Gardner House for Boys and Northbridge House for Girls, thanks to a grant from the Peyback Foundation. Youth Services staff will utilize the Rising Stars Youth Leadership Program to help youth develop their ability to make positive life choices based upon sound values and a vision of a successful future. The program is also intended to help boost their GPA's and to develop positive attitudes and self-confidence, which can reduce risk behaviors. It is designed to help today's youth develop their personal leadership skills and begin to set goals and direction for their lives. The Youth Services staff are thrilled to have received this grant award and look forward to the impact it will have on the youth they serve.

The Peyback Foundation was established by Indianapolis Colts quarterback and former UT Vols quarterback, Peyton Manning, in 1999. The foundation awarded a record $606,000 this year to charities serving disadvantaged youth in Indiana, Tennessee, and New Orleans. The Partnership's grant award was one of 34 agencies in Tennessee receiving a grant.

Cell Phone Drive Turns Hundreds of Phones into New Support for PFCA

The Partnership has completed its 3^rdannual community-wide campaign to collect used, unwanted cell phones for its Family Violence Shelter and Services. Over 700 phones that would have otherwise gone into landfills were collected and will be put to good use helping to fund advocacy, awareness and educational programs about domestic violence.

Although the drive is over, the Partnership is open to receive unwanted cell phones throughout the year at any of its office locations. Businesses and civic groups are encouraged to initiatie "Good Community Neighbor" collection campaigns with its employees, customers and vendors.

Nutcracker Sweets 2008

The third annual “Nutcracker Sweets,” a dessert sampling extravaganza and celebration, will be held at Bessie Smith Hall on Tuesday, December 2, 2008. This event will feature one-of-a kind desserts prepared by local chefs.

Proceeds will benefit the Partnership’s Crisis and Emergency Services. These services include the Family Violence Shelter, Sexual Assault Center, Emergency Shelter for Families, and Transitions Shelter for homeless and low income women. Each year, the Partnership provides crisis intervention services, emergency hotlines, counseling, shelter, advocacy and referral services to more than 3,000 individuals and families in our community.

Croquet for Kids

Croquet for Kids - Backyard Classic

May 2009

Croquet for Kids is a unique, family-centered event never before seen in Chattanooga – but it’s not your grandmother’s croquet! This backyard-style competition will feature a fast-paced, extreme version of the original classic. Teams made up of moms, dads, kids, neighbors and co-workers from across the community will compete at Coolidge Park for all the bragging rights and great prizes.

The new Market on Market is a creative twist on our classic annual event, Market Basket. This unique market, set up open-air style on Market Street, will offer locally produced, artisan goods – both edible and giftable – as well as live music and great food. Of course we will still have our traditionally beautiful baskets, as well as great company, only wrapped up in a fresh, fun package. Market on Market is local businesses and artisans supporting local families and individuals in need. Proceeds will support all the Partnership’s programs.

Croquet Ole: Tres de Mayo

The Partnership for Families, Children and Adults announces a unique event never before seen in Chattanooga - Croquet Ole! This is not your grandmother's game! Croquet Ole will feature a fast-paced, extreme version of the original classic. You are invited to get in on this exciting event to benefit the Partnership and its mission of empowering people to build better lives.

Croquet Ole will bring together teams of players from across the community for a unique and engaging competition on Saturday, May 3rd 2008 at Coolidge Park. It's the best way to kick off Cinco de Mayo weekend! Flights begin at 8:00 a.m. shortly after a review of the game rules and a brief practice. Each 6 member team will be pitted against each other for a shot at 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winning trophies and all bragging rights. Teams and players will also collect pledges to support the 22 programs of the Partnership, with the team and individual raising the most money to receive extreme prize packages.

Don't miss out on being part of the action. It's easy - just form a team, be a sponsor, or do both! Please review the enclosed registration form and sponsor benefit package and make plans to be at Coolidge Park for Croquet Ole on May 3rd.

Supporters of Croquet Ole will help fund a broad spectrum of programs needed to assist families and individuals throughout our community. The Partnership for Families, Children and Adults provides educational programs, counseling, crisis intervention and prevention services - touching the lives of more than 65,000 individuals each year.

TEAMS

Team fees are $300 per team (6 players) and are due with registration no later than April 30th. Team participants can choose to pay the full registration fee personally, or collect pledges to cover registration cost. Either way, all proceeds will benefit the Partnership. Teams and individual players can help further support the Partnership by collecting pledges through April 30th. An extreme prize package will be awarded both to the individual and to the team that raises the most pledge money ! Prize packages to be awarded during the Croquet Ole Awards Ceremony on Saturday, May 3rd.

Teams may register by completing the Team Registration Form below and then signing up for their very own fundraising web page by clicking the "Sign Up and Give Here" link below. Teams may register any time through April 30th. Fees and pledges are due to the Partnership Development Office no later than noon on April 30th. Please do not mail cash pledges. Different Strokes

Fathers and families have been enjoying Father’s Day Fun at this event for the past two years. Get dad out and about again at the 2008 Different Strokes event at the Chattanooga Market and enjoy miniature golf, games, and great prizes. Dads and kids alike competed in 2007 on the Velcro wall to win a Wii game system. What will be up for grabs this year? Stay tuned to find out…

National Family Week

National Family Week, an initiative of the Alliance for Children and Families, embraces the premise that children live better lives when their families are strong, and families are strong when they live in communities that connect them to economic opportunities, social networks, and services. The Partnership for Families, Children and Adults encourages Chattanooga to celebrate this week by getting involved in National Family Week activities. Last year, the Partnership recognized the Family of the Year and Family-Friendly Business of the Year with special awards to the family of Vanessa Montgomery and Southern Champion Tray. 2008 National Family Week activities and award nomination opportunities are to be announced.
